IOWA CITY, Iowa, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Twelve University of Iowa football players have been hospitalized with undisclosed illnesses, school officials said Tuesday.
A statement issued by the Iowa Athletic Department didn't disclose why the players were admitted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Monday, nor did it reveal their names or conditions.
But a hospital spokesman told The Des Moines Register the players' conditions posed no threat to the general public, while a University of Iowa statement said the footballers were responding well to treatment.
"The student-athletes were admitted throughout the course of Monday evening," the hospital said in statement. "All of the individuals are responding well to treatment as of Tuesday morning. All are in safe and stable condition."
"Our No. 1 concern is the safety of our student-athletes, so we are pleased with the positive feedback," Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta said. "Our next step is to find out what happened so we can avoid this happening in the future."
