Talks on Dutch coalition government stall     (US & National News)
09/04/2010 01:05 P (EST)
THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The leader of the Dutch Liberal Party said Saturday the latest attempt to form a coalition government in the Netherlands has failed.

Mark Rutte said the setback was due to uneasiness on the part of the Christian Democrats about working with the Freedom Party, a right-wing group noted for its anti-Muslim stance.

Queen Beatrix planned to meet with her advisers to discuss the options, Radio Netherlands reported.

The Netherlands has not had a permanent Cabinet in place since February, when the government fell apart amid dissension over the presence of Dutch troops in Afghanistan.

The Freedom Party won 24 seats in the subsequent elections, making it the No. 3 political party in Parliament. Party leaders have been trying to form a coalition government with the Christian Democrats and Rutte's free-market liberal VDD party that would hold a slim majority in the legislature.

Political observers told Euronews.net the current standoff does not necessarily mean another election would be called in the near future.
