PHOENIX, July 30 (UPI) -- Thunderstorms and high winds battered the Phoenix area, damaging a sports stadium and leaving the city looking "like a disaster area," a fire official said.
No injuries were reported.
The "monsoon" storms of high winds and hail ripped off roofs and forced evacuation of some residents, but no injuries were reported, The Arizona Republic said Friday.
Street signs were bent, limbs were torn off trees and some utility polls were knocked down, authorities said.
"It looks like a disaster area," Tempe Fire Department spokesman Mike Reichling told the newspaper. Tempe is in the Phoenix metro area.
The storm collapsed part of the roof of Treasures 4 Teachers, a Tempe donation center that collects school supplies and distributes them to teachers.
In nearby Glendale, strong winds blew a section of the roof off the University of Phoenix Stadium.
"I've never seen anything like it, the whole area was hit," said stadium spokesman Scott Norton.
Additionally, there were power outages, hail damage and some flooding, the paper reported.
